One of the most common comments I heard (from folks of my generation) when I worked as a Park Ranger at the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site was "We had a missile base in my home town."
Usually, it turned out to be a Nike Anti-aircraft battery. They were common around large metro areas and/or near military installations. The deployment of ICBMs was the prime factor of their demise.
